Faces of Praises

Sermon For First Sunday In October 2016

By Rev. Jide Taiwo

TEXT: Ephesians 5:19 Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord,

Praise is really more than singing songs in the church, it is a lifestyle of love from the heart. Praises to God is what we offer in acknowledgment of God excellent beings.

There is difference between Praises, Worship and Thanksgiving.

Praises is to express our admiration (delighted approval) for God, by lifting Him upon exaltation. The acts of celebrating God. Praise is offered for who God is -The LORD should be praised. I called on him, and I was saved from my enemies. (Psalms 18:3 GW)

Worship is expressing our reverent (showing profound(emotional dept.) respect) love and devotion to God, the acts of doing something like reading Bible, praying, giving and singing.

Thanksgiving describes our attitude towards what God has done.

It is a command for us to Praise God

I have formed these people for myself. They will praise me. (Isaiah 43:21 GW)

We are created in order to praise Him, failure to do so is a sin.

Hebrew 13: 15 confirmed it

Through Jesus we should always bring God a sacrifice of praise, that is, words that acknowledge him. (Hebrews 13:15 GW). Jesus is the divine channel of our praises to God.

Praises originate from the heart that is full of love toward God

Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5 GW)

Do you love God? Love, born from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is essential part of our praise.

Praise can be done through songs, poem, confessing the goodness of God, Bible reading, Giving, obedience, praying and it is to be done continuously at home, office etc

I will thank the LORD at all times. My mouth will always praise him. (Psalms 34:1 GW)

I depended on you before I was born. You took me from my mother’s womb. My songs of praise constantly speak about you. (Psalms 71:6 GW)

Also being expressed outwardly through our everyday actions as well as inwardly in our thought- ( give example of yours- Tope Alabi registered in my heart)

How will I start it?

so that the kindness he had given us in his dear Son would be praised and given glory. (Ephesians 1:6 GW)

  • Praise Him for His kindness –Psalm 117
  • Praise Him for your salvation – Eph 2:8-9; I Peter 2:9

You can offer praise anywhere as I have said earlier –

I will find joy and be glad about you. I will make music to praise your name, O Most High. (Psalms 9:2 GW)

Which position can I be when praising Him?

  • Sitting – Acts 2:1-2
  • Kneeling – Psalm 95:6 – Come, let’s worship and bow down. Let’s kneel in front of the LORD, our maker, (Psalms 95:6 GW)

Who Praise Him?

When offered by His children –

Are you one of them?

Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?

When people see you, do they see a reflection of God’s praise?

From where the sun rises to where the sun sets, the name of the LORD should be praised. (Psalms 113:3 GW)

O Lord frustrate all the agenda of those who hinder my praises on to you.
